Ireland: Young Muslim group gathers in Athlone to help bolster towns flood defences

Muslims from across the country gathered in Athlone to help prevent flooding in the town.

A group of eighteen volunteers from Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Athlone and Longford gathered in the lake county to help bolster flood defences in the aftermath of Storm Desmond over the last few days.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth helped the local council with the placing of sandbags and began the clean-up operation where they were able to.

Dr Mamoon Rashid, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth, said that “a message of love for all, and hatred for none” had brought the group to help with flood defences in Athlone.

He added that his religion has inspired them to come to the aid of the people of Athlone.

“The Ahmaddiyya Muslim community believes that it is their duty to help people in distress.

“We are aware that many have been affected just before Christmas festivities and therefore we will be delighted to help,” he said.

This comes after Muslims from across Ireland helped to raise money for flood victims last week.

Imans from Cork, Athlone, Limerick and Longford held special prayers for flood victims.

Local residents have been hard at work to prevent the flood waters breaking the banks of the Shannon.

The town suffered severe flood damage in 2009 and history looked set to repeat itself but with the town rallying, the worst of the floods seem to have been prevented.
