Pre-referendum polls suggest that it promises to be hotly contested vote

Islamabad: Only weeks after the national local body elections were concluded, Pakistanis will be scrambling to the polls again to cast their votes in the snap referendum called to decide on the country’s most hated figure.

The choice is between Malala, Donald Trump and Ahmadis.

The historic vote was triggered after recent events in Hafeez Center when protests occurred at the arrest of a shopkeeper for displaying a provocative sticker against the latter.

“Seeing as how we can’t control our hate we’ve decided to channel our heightened levels of national animosity against a particular target,” said a government spokesperson with a villainous cackle. When asked why politicians were not on the list he rushed to make a peace sign and a quick getaway.

According to most polls it promises to be hotly contested vote.

Large crowds of people flooded on to the streets when the announcement for the referendum was made. Many waved flags and banners painted with slogans like ‘Let’s learn to hate each other together’ and the timeless classic ‘I hate you’.

Fareed Raja, a no good loafer, took time out from assaulting a dove to tell us: “I’ll be voting for Mr Trump. Pakistan has been pioneering the kind of intolerance and bigotry he’s espousing for decades now. We were Donald Trumps before even Donald Trump knew he was Donald Trump. He’s stealing from our traditions for his own political gains and I don’t like it.”

Malala too appeared to be a popular or indeed unpopular choice. “Oh look at me I stand up for girls education, I got shot by the Taliban, I’m trying to the make a world a better place,” shrilled one woman we spoke to. “Well you know what Malala I don’t even know how to read and no-one has turned me into a hero,” she added much to everyone’s complete and utter bemusement.

Some though were not happy with the choices on the list. “The non-appearance of liberals and quarrelsome wives completely discredits this referendum in my opinion,” said a haggard looking man trying his best to appear as though he wore the trousers in his house.

“I totally agree,” said one nosy passerby who interrupted our interview. “I have it the worst. My wife is a liberal. She thinks that our Ahmadi neighbors deserve to live and always hides the matches every time I plan to burn down their home for no good reason. You tell me, what am I to do? Forget Ahmadis, everyone should vote against her.”

Other options that had been up for considerationas part of the ballot were gwalas, British immigration officials and the historically reviled ghar kee murghi.
