Student, 18, was targeted in New Street by man wearing a grey hoodie

A Muslim woman wearing a hijab was brutally punched in the face in Birmingham city centre in what is thought to be an Islamophobic attack.

Miss Choudhury, 18, who did not want her first name published, said she had been left shocked after the assault which happened as she was walking along New Street.

Her attacker, who was wearing a grey hooded top, just came up to her and punched her in the street.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack, which happened at 7.30am on Monday, November 23, and said they were treating it as a ‘hate crime’.

Miss Chaudary who is a student said the traumatic experience means that she is now scared to walk through the city centre by herself.

She told the Mail: “I feel shocked and really scared that someone could attack you for no reason. I don’t feel safe at all now.

“I was walking to the train station to meet some friends when someone shoved me from behind.

“When I turned around he punched me in the face and then just went off.

“I was really upset afterwards. I can only think it was because he saw my hijab as he didn’t take my bag or anything.

“I’ve lived in Birmingham all my life and I’ve never experienced something like this before.”

The student suffered bruising but said the emotional impact has been more difficult to deal with than her physical injuries.

She fears Muslims are being increasingly targeted because of the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.

She explained: “It’s made life harder for innocent Muslims. We don’t want people to be killed - that’s not our religion. Our religion is all about peace.

“My parents are so scared that they’re telling me to take my hijab off. My mum’s telling me to wear a hat instead.”

Miss Choudhury said one thing which would make her feel safer is seeing more police on the streets.

West Midlands Police confirmed they were investigating the attack.

Det Sgt Reg Collett said: “We take all reports of hate crimes extremely seriously and I would urge anyone with information about this assault to come forward.”

West Midlands Police asked anyone with information to contact them by calling 101.

  1. A disgusting act. Do these people always go and take revenge on someone who has noting to do with their anger? Sounds like they need to reassess their morals not Muslims.

  2. This is really an inhuman act. Its evident that this act is because of islamphobia. No one has the right to attack any person, man or woman, for any reason. Every nation has its culture and has its religion. In this aspect, everyone has the right to live according to his/her own culture or religion. Muslims wear Hijaab,so what. Their religion teaches them to do so. So,what is the issue with other people. By wearing Hijaab, nothing goes wrong in any other person's life. People wear clothes of their choice. But no one attacks them or scolds them for what they are wearing. Its their choice. Same is the case in wearing Hijaab. People should remove their misconceptions about Muslim woman who wear Hijaab. And people should also know their limits. They should think once before doing such ill act that if they have been beaten for their attire, what would they feel.

  3. Attacking an innocent women is a cowardly act. This is not acceptable in any religion of the world or even in the general world. Attacking innocent people is not going stop the terrorists.
Plus, this is happening in a country that calls itself civilized and calls itself the up holder of women's rights. How do this man's actions show civilized or even respectable attitude towards a woman?

  4. Love makes us, hate breaks us. Phobia against our fellow human beings has no outcome other than tearing us apart. Open up your eyes people, Muslims are not your enemy.
