The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Mosque in Oshkosh held a prayer vigil Friday night for the victims of the San Bernardino, California, shooting.
The sign outside the mosque says “All are welcome.” The 5:30 p.m. event was open to everyone, whether Muslim or a member of another faith.
The Ahmadiyaa Muslim community says it’s important to express their support for victims of recent violence and let others know it’s vital to do whatever it takes to maintain peace.
“There’s enough turmoil in the world today, and also recent political turmoil, let’s say, so it was needed as a moment of healing for the community to come together and be together,” Khurram Ahmad said.
The people filled a room in the basement of the mosque, hoping to send a strong message of unity.
“We all want peace and harmony in our neighborhoods, in the world. When that is portrayed, hopefully it negates some of the negative comments or just the ugly emotions that may be out there,” Ahmad said.
Amy Matz of Oshkosh, a Roman Catholic, was among those who participated.
She said, “We live in a melting pot, and I think that education is where it’s at, and I think that’s how you’re going to get people to accept others if we learn about others.”
Muslims who went hope the gathering will give people a better understanding of Islam and what it preaches.
Ahmed Khan, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said, “It dispels any kind of violent and terrorist activity. We are in no way supporting any of that, and we were horrified just like every other American citizen when this event happened on our soil.”
The program consisted of a prayer service and speakers, followed by a social.
The event lasted about an hour.
