USA: San Bernardini Ahmadi Muslim group to honor police chief

“Frankly, it does paint Muslims into a corner as showing that it’s us-versus-them. With us being Americans and them being the Muslims. That Muslims are almost the polar opposite of the Americans.”

Jarrod Burguan expected to attend Ahmadiyya Muslim conference in Chino.

Harris Zafar, an author and national spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, called the rhetoric misguided and divisive.

“Frankly, it does paint Muslims into a corner as showing that it’s us-versus-them,” said Zafar. “With us being Americans and them being the Muslims. That Muslims are almost the polar opposite of the Americans.”

Zafar also pointed to statements from Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., who encouraged a campus audience of several thousand people to obtain conceal-and-carry permits for firearms.

“Then we could end those Muslims before ... before they walked in and killed,” said Falwell, in early December.

That stood as another example of what Zafar called dangerous and sloppy language.

“It’s not saying terrorists or attackers,” said Zafar. “He said, ‘those Muslims.’ So that’s part of the problem.”

Along with Burguan, Rep. Norma Torres, D-Pomona, also is scheduled to speak at the feature session at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at the Bait ul Hameed Mosque in Chino.

About 1,500 people are expected to attend the three-day conference, which concludes Sunday, Dec. 27.

“POSITIVE MESSAGE”

Conference speakers will share advice on how to live a good life as a Muslim, how to say regular prayers and balancing being American with being a Muslim. Mixed in will be talks that address extremism, how to protect children from radical ideology and identifying warning signs of those following that path.

On Saturday morning, Dr. Ahsan Khan, president of the movement’s Los Angeles East chapter, plans to discuss domestic harmony. Khan said he would welcome Jerry Falwell Jr., and others with similar views on Islam, to be part of the audience.
