EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In light of recent events the Muslim community in East Syracuse decided to open up their doors to teach others what their faith is all about, and more importantly what it's not.

Muslims and non-Muslims alike came together to study and learn one faith Sunday.

"I believe dialogue and education is what bridges the gap between different communities and we realize how much we have in common," said Imam Hamid Malik.

After Donald Trump's comments about banning all Muslims from coming into the U.S., Malik says he's taking this as an opportunity to teach the difference between Islamic faith and extremist ideology.

"They take verses out of the Quran completely out of context and then attribute certain saying from the prophet Mohammed that were added later on. Then they try to brainwash the youth into believing that's what real Islam is," said Malik.

By coming together Muslims here say they want people to know that Islam does not teach violence or any acts of hate.

"ISIS wants to write this narrative that Islam is somehow a religion of violence and that the west is against Islam. We - the Muslim community who are vocal in condemning these acts of terrorism - we will not let that narrative run," said Malik.

Next week there will also be a blood drive in response to the blood that was shed during those terror attacks.
