Already battling with the kidnapping of young girls and forced conversions, Hindus in Pakistan are now protesting against a Karachi-based shoe-making company for insulting the holy Hindu word, ‘Om’.

Millions of Hindus living in Pakistan were shocked and agitated after the company tried to sell ladies’ shoes in a Karachi market that had 'Om' embedded on them.

According to the Pakistan Hindu Council, the controversial footwear was first put on sale by the First Step Shoe Store in Karachi’s famous Park Tower Shopping Mall three years ago. Since then, the store has been selling these shoes openly in markets nationwide.

The First Step Shoe Store has 14 branches all over Pakistan where such shoes are sold. Their sales double during the month of Ramzan, shortly before Eid.

The Hindu community in Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the sale of such shoes, arguing that the purpose is just to insult the sentiments of local Hindus.

Dr Ramesh Kumar, a prominent Pakistani parliamentarian and the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hindu Council, has demanded an immediate ban, adding that such acts fuel an atmosphere of fear, insecurity and mistrust.

He demanded that authorities in Pakistan take strict action against the culprits so that such incidents don’t happen again.

“This is an act of blasphemy. It has shocked the millions of Hindus living Pakistan. This needs to be stopped,” Ramesh Kumar told Mail Today.

The All Pakistan Hindu Panchayat (APHP), another Hindu organisation based in Karachi, has condemned the act of selling such controversial shoes and has urged the owner of the shoe store to stop the sale.

The owner of the store has allegedly threatened to throw them out of the showroom.

Later, APHP members reported the incident to the local police. However, no action has been taken so far.
