Muslims are in the midst of their holiest month, Ramadan, and yet most people don’t know what it’s about. It’s a month of fasting during the daytime hours for those whose health will allow it. But more so, it is a time of gaining spiritual insight through prayer and reflection rather than chowing down.
By fasting, you hopefully also learn to empathize with the masses around the world and also here at home who can’t afford a proper meal.
In Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad would intensify charitable giving. Ramadan is also a wonderful time to share the tradition of breaking the fast with your friends and neighbors.
So in a world steeped in contradictions and hypocrisy, where misguided Muslim renegades sadly use the guise of holiness in this month to rev up their evil plots against innocent civilians — such as the recent Orlando shooting — this Muslim-American encourages his fellow countrymen to visit his mosque for an evening dinner and see for yourself what Ramadan really means. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Pittsburgh Chapter, will hold a Ramadan interfaith dinner June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Al-Nur Mosque, 747 South Ave., Wilkinsburg. Send an email to pittsburghmuslim@gmail.com if you would like to attend.
