As part of its "Muslims for Loyalty" campaign, The Amahdiyya Muslim Community USA launched annual Independence Day celebrations on Sunday, July 3.

"There are negative forces working to influence American Muslim youth to become terrorists, and, sadly, they are having some success. This gives rise to homegrown terrorism," the mosque said in a media statement. "The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA seeks to spread the message of loyalty to the United States of America and debunk the myth that Muslims do not stand for peace and justice. This campaign aims to raise awareness that there is a community of Muslims who actively preach — and practice — this universal teaching of Islam: Muslims have a religious duty to be loyal to their country of residence."

The event, which was held at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Old Bridge, began Sunday with the raising of the American flag and playing of the national anthem. The outreach secretary for the Central Jersey Ahmadiyya Community, Tariq Sharif, welcomed all the participants and said that this event sought to help demonstrate the loyalty and appreciation that Muslims feel for this country, whether they are born Americans or have emigrated here.

In addition, with the recent tragedy in Orlando as well other terrorist atrocities in Istanbul and Dhaka fresh in our minds, it was an opportunity for Muslims to reiterate their total condemnation of these cruel acts and to repudiate the hateful ideology of the extremists.

“Loyalty to one’s country of residence is part of Muslim faith, according to the saying of Prophet Muhammad, and this is exactly what our community is doing by participating in such activities,” said Mir Sharif Ahmad, president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Central Jersey Chapter.

The event was co-sponsored by the "Land for the Homeless" charity with the goal of raising funds for the charity and increasing awareness of the plight of the homeless in New Jersey.

Kyler Dineen, executive director of Land for the Homeless, spoke about the challenges that homeless in the area experienced and the goal of his charity to buy a plot of land where the homeless could pitch tents and have a safe place to stay. State Sen. Sam Thompson and Councilwoman Lucille Panos also spoke briefly, expressing their support for the "Muslims for Loyalty" campaign and the "Land for the Homeless" charity. A barbecue lunch was provided for guests.
