Many Australians probably don’t understand the immense courage of Ehsan Ullah Malhi (Letters, 13/9) and members of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam in publicly decrying Islamic terrorism. The Ahmadis are regarded by mainstream Muslims as heretics. They are regularly attacked, persecuted and killed in Pakistan and in northern India by Shia Muslims.
Alone among Muslims, the Ahmadis recently wrote letters of condolence to Catholic congregations in Australia, deploring the murder of French priest Jacques Hamel by Islamist terrorists, and they attended his requiem mass.
The UN has been oblivious to the plight of the Ahmadis; it has failed to pass a single resolution, instead bowing to mainstream Muslim lobbying.
They seek asylum in the West, but are not safe even there; one was killed quite recently by a fellow Muslim in Glasgow for “disrespecting the Muslim faith” by his Ahmadi status.
Ehsan Malhi and his Ahmadi brothers place themselves at great risk of retaliation by mainstream Muslims for taking this peaceful and apologetic stance against terrorism.
