Perspective: Persecution of religious groups is un-Islamic | Arsalan Ahmad Khan
“To take any man’s life or his property, or attack his honor, is as unjust and wrong as to violate the sacredness of this day, this month and this territory.”

Dear Editor,
Waking up in the morning and reading about attacks against religious minorities is always unsettling. Even more so when you belong to that religious minority. On December 12th, a mob of some 1,000 individuals attacked a mosque belonging to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan. The Community has been labelled as non-Muslims as per the Pakistani constitution and their members are ridiculed and persecuted by individuals and the government. I strongly condemn this and all attacks of persecution on Ahmadis and other minority groups in Pakistan.
These mobs are a consequence of state-sanctioned persecution as just a few days earlier the Pakistani authorities raided the administrative offices of the Community in its headquarters in Rabwah. This incident comes as a shock and complete disappointment because the mob started as a celebration procession of the Holy Prophet, a true Messenger of Peace, who stated in his farewell address, “To take any man’s life or his property, or attack his honor, is as unjust and wrong as to violate the sacredness of this day, this month and this territory.”
For decades now Ahmadis have faced persecution in Pakistan, where simply saying aloud the faith they practice to their right to vote has been stripped from them. These are a direct assault on every social and civil right afforded to citizens. I urge humanitarian organizations and governments to take a stand.
I urge all to support me in making things peaceful and encourage the authorities to once and for all restore the balance and peace missing from the country by not disenfranchising minority groups.
