Perspective: Muslim at Orange Coast College | Hus Syed

Immigrants are the reason this country is doing so well because they work long and hard hours just to put the food on the table. This ban has even made Muslim citizens fear for their lives.

I love this country with all my heart.

I’m a 24-year-old Muslim and a citizen of United States who escaped Pakistan in March of 2002.

I belong to a minority sect of Islam, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. According to Pakistan’s law, which took into effect in 1974, all Ahmadi Muslims are banned from practicing their religion and if they are caught they would be persecuted. Many members of my community get shot every week simply because they are a part of it.

Living in Trump’s America has brought that fear back into my blood. Trump signing an executive order to ban certain Muslim countries is the biggest mistake he has made.

America is supposed to be land of opportunity, for people who come from nothing to work hard and have a chance to live the American dream which I call upward mobility. It’s scary that a first world country, which guarantees freedom of religion, is igniting the same fear as being from a third world country filled with corrupt leadership and poverty.

Immigrants are the reason this country is doing so well because they work long and hard hours just to put the food on the table. This ban has even made Muslim citizens fear for their lives.

I have three sisters and a mom who wear hijabs when they go out. As an overprotective brother and a son, I have to live in fear that one of these days my mom or my sisters will get harassed or attacked because of what they are wearing.

I’m a proud American who moved to Orange County, California at the age of 10 and have been living here ever since. I’m a diehard Lakers fan and I love Kobe Bryant. I’m a public relations major and my goal is to work for the Lakers.

I love this country with all my heart I can’t even think about leaving California. For someone to take over and ban certain Muslim countries is outrageous. Many Muslims that were immigrants and worked hard are in the medical industry, but if you ban immigrants, you lose all these great people who are trying to help make a difference in this country.

Studies show 60 percent of Americans don’t know a Muslim and have never met one. Donald Trump is dividing us all. We have to be strong, hold hands and stand together against him.

We can’t let his hatred get to us, we must unite. United we stand, divided we fall.
