The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Lloydminster held its Islam Understood event Monday night to provide locals with the opportunity to learn about the true teachings of Islam.
Tariq Azeem, imam/missionary with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in Lloydminster, said the event was pretty good but the attendance was not as they were expecting.
“We were expecting more people to show up,” Azeem said. “But we did have a few people, so some good conversations were carried out and I had along with me a couple members from the youth group.”
Azeem explained having the members of the youth group come around with him are getting the knowledge first hand on how to convey the message of peace and how to talk to different people, adding, “it’s a learning experience for them as well.”
Azeem said the people who attended the event did not have questions but came to support them.
“To show that we need to have a tolerant community, a community where all religions, all cultures and faiths can get along very well,” he said.
Becky Walker was one of the attendees of the event and saw it as an opportunity to see what information was available, and to make sure she had information for her children if she were to hear questions.
“There’s so much going on in the media that there is the potential for them to hear so I want to make sure I have good information for them to talk about with,” she said.
Azeem said four more events have been planned for the month of April. Every Monday throughout the month an event will be held at the library called Coffee and Islam from 6 to 8 p.m.
“The purpose is to invite local people and have a casual, light conversation over coffee, people can bring their questions and learn about Islam,” Azeem said.
While promoting the Islam Understood event on social media, Azeem said he received some negative comments.
“I do wish that instead of those people who say negative things that if they actually come out, they will find Muslims to be peaceful people, tolerant people,” he said.
Azeem said if anyone has questions regarding anything related to their faith, something that they might have heard but don’t really understand, they’d be more than happy to give a better picture of those things.
“This is our intent behind this program,” Azeem said. “To have a light and casual discussion and no formal presentation, but discussion with any of the guests that would like to learn.”
