'It's important to stand together'

Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) have attended a vigil in Trafalgar Square to remember the victims of the Westminster terror attack.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community have strongly condemned the attacks on Wednesday, March 22, when a Muslim convert called Khalid Masood drove his car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before attacking and killing a policeman at the Houses of Parliament.

AMYA volunteers from across London and Surrey, including Morden, Epsom, Carshalton and New Malden, attended the vigil to spread their message of “love for all, hatred for none”.

AMYA representative Jamil Bhatti, said: “We are all local British Muslims, and this has sadly happened here in Britain and sadly it’s a Muslim that has done it.

“We want to show solidarity with the victims who were killed and injured on that day.

“It’s important to stand together, regardless of our backgrounds.

“Islam doesn’t teach hatred. We have to show the true message of Islam and show the public that this is not what Islam represents. We want to fight this hatred between communities and faiths.

“We only got positive reactions from people at the rally. A lot of people thanked us for coming, and wanted pictures with us. It was important for us to be there, and we were glad to be a part of it.”

Thousands of Londoners gathered for the vigil in Trafalgar Square on Thursday, March 23.

Addressing the crowd, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We are here to send a clear message that Londoners will never be cowed by terrorism. Those evil and twisted individuals who try to destroy our shared way of life will never succeed.

“London is a great city full of amazing people from all backgrounds, and when Londoners face adversity, we stand up for our values and show everyone that we are the greatest city in the world.

“Our response to this attack against our city and our way of life shows the world what it means to be a Londoner.”
