National Ask Islam spokesperson Ahmed Sahi hopes visitors will talk walk away from an upcoming question and answer session with a better understanding of the oft-misunderstood faith.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association will host the event starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Peterborough Lions Community Centre. The event will include a free dinner and interactive question and answer session.
There is an acute shortage of correct, genuine and authentic information on Islam in Canada, where most only known what they see in the media, organizers stated.
But that ignores most of a vast religion that spans hundreds of cultures and dozens of countries with rich and deep traditions of learning and spirituality, they added.“It is important to provide our fellow Canadians with the correct information,” Sahi said. “That helps everybody ... We’re all in this together.”
Breaking down barriers is critical, he added, explaining how the teachings of Islam do not include anything that Canadians would not respect – something that organizers aim to shine more light on through the nationwide initiative.
Ask Islam was launched to provide Canadians with an open platform to learn about Islam from fellow Muslims in Canada.
The events typically hear a broad spectrum of questions, Sahi said, from topics such as jihad, Sharia law to the doctorate and philosophy of Islam and the Quran.
The current campaign comes at an important time as increasing controversy surrounding Islam and Muslims in the west has created misunderstandings about Islam and a growing apprehension of Muslims, organizers stated.
As a result, there is a growing need of grass root engagement to remove these misconceptions.
“We look forward to seeing everyone who is interested in joining us,” Sahi said. For more information, visit www.IslamUnderstood.com/Ask
