Canada: Possible “crime of convenience” fire damages outbuilding at Ahmadiyya mosque

The Ahmadiyya community does not want to “jump to any conclusions” and will wait to comment further until the authorities complete their investigation, said Mubarik Syed, who speaks on behalf of the 1,500-member community.

Investigators are looking into a fire that damaged an outbuilding at a Saskatoon mosque, but evidence suggests it was a “crime of convenience” rather than a hate crime, according to a fire department spokesman.

The fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. Thursday when someone ignited pallets stacked outside a shed belonging to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at mosque on Boychuk Drive, Acting Battalion Chief Kevin Ritz said Friday afternoon.

The Ahmadiyya community does not want to “jump to any conclusions” and will wait to comment further until the authorities complete their investigation, said Mubarik Syed, who speaks on behalf of the 1,500-member community.

It’s not clear how much damage the shed sustained, Syed said. It was used to store equipment, kitchen supplies and books.

Constable Ryan Ehalt confirmed Saskatoon police investigators are also looking into the fire. He said police should have more information early next week.
