Perspective: Burqa – is not a burden | Maryum Samar Ali

Syeda Warsi is completely wrong in two ways. One in categorizing some muslims as British Muslims / British Islam and second in suggesting them to not follow a basic principle of Islam.

Totally surprised by the pressure a Muslim ex-cabinet minister feels about Muslims women wearing burqas. Strange ! Syeda Warsi either in trying to please the public, or to gain votes for her party made some incorrect statements at Hay Literary Festival.

First of all there is no such category of Muslims called British Muslims. Islam is a universal religion and Islamic practices of one nation are not different from that of another nation. So when Ms.Warsi suggests and I quote "not the best manifestation of British Islam". "I want British Muslims to lead that charge .."1 she is completely wrong in two ways. One in categorizing some Muslims as British Muslims / British Islam and second in suggesting them to not follow a basic principle of Islam.

Chapter 24 Verse 32 of The Holy Quran states,  "And say to the believing women that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts, and that they disclose not their natural and artificial beauty except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head-coverings over their bosoms, and that they disclose not their beauty save to their husbands, or to their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands or their sons or the sons of their husbands or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their women, or what their right hands possess, or such of male attendants as have no sexual appetite, or young children who have no knowledge of the hidden parts of women. And they strike not their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may become known. And turn ye to Allah all together, O believers, that you may succeed."2

So why should any Muslim stop wearing clothes that give her courage, dignity and strength to face the public pressures of daily life outside her home. The best manifestation of any principle of any religion cannot depend on what a certain local community thinks or wants. It’s what the Holy Book or Holy Prophet of that religion stated.  It should be followed in letter and spirit all around the world.
