UK: Court hears 14-year-old 'sparked £12million blaze at Europe's biggest mosque' in 2015


The blaze on September 26, 2015, took place the day after Eid, where more than 13,000 visit the mosque to pray and gutted a third of the building.

A 14-year-old arsonist is accused of sparking a £12million blaze at Europe's biggest before wandering outside to film the chaos.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sneaked into a kitchen cupboard to play with a gas barbecue lighter at Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, London.

He was helping to prepare a meal with his father for a visiting Australian and Norwegian delegations and a wedding.

Inside the cupboard, used for storing pots of fire gels and other banqueting equipment, he ignited the lighter several times before a fire took hold, Kingston Crown Court heard.

The blaze on September 26, 2015, took place the day after Eid, where more than 13,000 visit the mosque to pray and gutted a third of the building.

The teen, wearing chef's whites, is said to have fled moments before smoke began to fill the mosque and wandered around the perimeter, filming the fire with his phone.
