USA: Virginia officials defend police inaction leading to deadly clashes in Charlottesville


Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer: 'Criticism of the police is mistaken because nearly 1,000 law enforcement personnel were assembled for the city's biggest response since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.'

Virginia officials on Sunday defended the police response to a white nationalist demonstration in Charlottesville, despite clashes that left one counter-protester dead and dozens injured.

The violence erupted Saturday as police stood to the side, without initially getting between factions of protesters at Emancipation Park. After police declared the gathering unlawful and cleared the park, a woman was later killed on a nearby street after a car slammed into a crowd of counter-protesters.

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer told CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday that criticism of the police is mistaken because nearly 1,000 law enforcement personnel were assembled for the city's biggest response since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“We had a very strong security plan in place with a lot of folks, to allow people to express their views,” Signer said.
