Event in Hartford now in its 2nd year

HARTFORD -- A group of Muslim men and boys will offer a chance to ask believers in Islam about their religion at the second annual Meet a Muslim Day on Saturday.

The event, which will include a blood drive, is sponsored by Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, the young men’s organization of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, is one of 80 across the nation to spread understanding of the Islamic faith, according to a press release.

“As active and engaged Americans, our mission is to always promote dialogue and understanding between all people,” said Bilal Rana, national president of AMYA, in the release.

“The best way to defeat ignorance about Islam is to make ourselves available as sources of knowledge about our faith. According to a Pew Research Poll, 62 percent of Americans say they don’t know a Muslim. We want to change this by getting out in our local communities, engaging in dialogue, and thereby tackling the misconceptions people have about Islam,” Rana said.

The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at Bushnell Park, 15 Trinity St.

AMYA, founded in 1939, is composed of more than 3,000 men and boys, aged 7 to 40, in 70 local chapters. Its headquarters are in Silver Spring, Maryland.
