Canada: Ahmadiyya Muslim youth group continuing with successful Adopt-A-Highway program

“This is the moral obligation, this is the religious duty that Muslims have on them, and our community does it a lot whenever they have the time or whenever they can volunteer.”

Back in 2015 the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Lloydminster took part in the “Adopt-A-Highway” program, and have since continued with their work.

On Oct. 5 there were 11 participants who went out to their section of the road to clean up for two hours.

The group is responsible for approximately 3.2 kilometers along Highway 16, starting at Range Road 13 west of Lloydminster to Range Road 15.

“This is part of our belief, this is part of our religion. It is our religious duty to do so, that is why we signed up for ‘Adopt-A-Highway,’” explained Mansoor Azeem, Iman, and missionary.

However, it’s not just in Alberta that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at community is taking care of highways, it’s all over Canada.

“We are doing this program everywhere, wherever we can we try to clean the towns,” said Azeem.

The participants were able to collect 11 bags of litter. They choose this time of year to go out because it was just before the snow hit.

“When the summer comes we will have two to three programs to clean up highways,” said Azeem.

Azeem noted the community doesn’t just clean up the highways, they also go around town to clean up.

“Our community does regular cleanups on New Year’s as well,” he said, adding how helping to keep places and the world clean was just part of their faith.

“This is the moral obligation, this is the religious duty that Muslims have on them, and our community does it a lot whenever they have the time or whenever they can volunteer,” he said.

This time around it was the youth part of the Lloydminster chapter that went out to clean the highway.

Youth President Farrukh Sheraz said, “This is a great way to keep our youth attached to the community and to help them realize the importance of keeping our town clean.”

In the past, the youth have visited senior homes, collected for food drives and they hope to continue with that work.

Mamoon Malik assists with the youth organization and said going out to clean the highways was important.

“It’s a responsibility for us to do, it’s a part of our faith too as well to do cleaning,” he said. “For the highway clean up it’s like making a habit for the young kids, to make their place clean and to clean up a community as much as we can take part of that.”

He added how taking the youth group out to clean up was a way they could show the younger members the importance of cleaning up.

The chapter has multiple auxiliary organizations, including women, youth, children, and elders.

Each organization takes part in helping with cleaning the highway, and the previous time it was the women.

The “Adopt-A-Highway” program contract is under Alberta Transportation, and the Ahmayiyya Muslim Jama’at Canada Inc., a sign is located along their strip of highway.
