Youngsters from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) kicked off the new year with a crack of dawn litter-picking session in Farnham.

The annual New Year’s Day litter-pick by AMYA is designed to instil community spirit within its young members. This is the third year the association has taken on this initiative.

The session began with early morning prayers at 6am after which the youths grabbed their litter pickers and bin bags and started cleaning up the streets.

The AMYA youth leader for Surrey and Hampshire Region, Khalid Bhatti, said: “The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that cleanliness is a part of faith. This alongside our passion to train our youth to be model citizens are the motivating factors for this event.”

Farnham Town Council afterwards posted its thanks on Twitter: “Great work guys! Thank you so much for all you do.”

Clean-up sessions were also held by AMYA members in Aldershot and Portsmouth.
