Walkathon raises $4000 for charity

Members of the Ahmadiyya community in Auckland raised $4000 for the ‘Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind’ through their annual Walkathon.

‘Majlis Ansarullah (‘Helpers of Allah’) New Zealand,’ the auxiliary arm of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at New Zealand organised the event on March 6.

The community is small in New Zealand with about 250 families subscribing to this faith.

Majlis Ansarullah National President Mohammed Iqbal said the members followed the Islamic teachings of “helping people and neighbours first.”

“The Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind being our neighbours (in Wiri, Manukau City) became the obvious choice,” he said.

About 64 members and 20 volunteers participated in the Walkathon, which began at Barry Curtis Park in Flatbush Manukau and ended at the office of the organisation in Wiri.

Among those featured in the event were officials of Royal New Zealand Navy, Auckland City Council, the New Zealand Automobile Association and the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind.

National Manager for Guide Dog Services Paul Metcalf, who received the donation on behalf of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind, said the cost of raising and training one guide dog was $22,000.

“The Foundation is therefore grateful for any help rendered. The Ahmadiyya Community has donated money for a good cause,” he said.

Further information about the event and the activities of Ahmadiyyas can be obtained from Mohammed Iqbal on 021-2573468 or Health & Sports Secretary Bashir Khan on 021-778425.
