Happy birthday, eh?
Tens of thousands of Calgarians are expected to celebrate Canada’s 143rd birthday Thursday at events all around the city.
Stephanie Barnett, City of Calgary event coordinator, said approximately 80,000 people are expected to enjoy the free festivities from noon until 6 p.m. at Prince’s Island Park, and up to 20,000 will gather at Olympic Plaza in the evening for more performances and fireworks.
“We always strive to bring in acts that are both local and regional,” she said.
“It’s a good way of providing artists a place to perform on the festival circuit and gives the public a chance to see acts they might not otherwise.”
Prince’s Island Park will feature a family stage — with several acts including Gustavo the Impossiblist, Sandbox Theatre and Tasha Platt — and two other stages that will host acts such as Shane Ghostkeeper, Steve Pineo and The Wandering V’s.
There will also be martial arts and cultural performances as well as 35 food and merchandise vendors, said Barnett.
The evening show at Olympic Plaza, which kicks off at 8 p.m. and wraps up at 11:30 p.m. with the fireworks slotted for 10:45 p.m., will include performances from Wil, Souljah Fyah and The United Steel Workers of Montreal.
Meanwhile, Heritage Park will celebrate Canada Day the old-fashioned way beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The first 2010 people through the gates before 10 a.m. will receive a free pancake breakfast, said park spokeswoman Barb Munro.
“We’re expecting huge crowds, we always get huge crowds on Canada Day,” she said, adding people can buy tickets online in advance.
The park, which will host an old-fashioned circus as well as live music, will see 100 new Canadian citizens get sworn in and will offer free birthday cake to visitors.
A family affair at Fort Calgary will provide a free pancake breakfast between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. as more than six-hours-worth of live stage entertainment kicks off in partnership with Cantos Music Foundation.
There will also be carnival games, bouncing houses, pony rides, and a petting zoo.
And Calgary’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at community will host a flag ceremony and free barbecue at Prairie Winds Park in the city’s northeast at 11 a.m.
Exhibits from the Muslim community as well as the Calgary Public Library, emergency service sectors and the Genesis Center of Family Wellness will also be set up.
