20 streets will be co-named in Queens New York, including the 85th Road
The City Council passed legislation last Thursday that would co-name streets across the city for 95 influential residents or groups — with 20 of them being in Queens.
In Jamaica Estates, 85th Road will be co-named Ahmadiyya Way after the religious movement, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, founded in India.
Holliswood Community Board had approved co-naming part of 85th Road as "Ahmadiyya Way" in 2017, to honor the Holliswood Ahmadiyya Bait Uz-Zafar Mosque.
According to a Queens Chronicle report last year, the section of 85th Road to be co-named runs from 188th Street to the house that abuts the mosque’s parking lot.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community 'is a dynamic, fast growing international revival movement within Islam,' it's website says.
Founded in 1889 in Qadian, India, the movement now spans over 208 countries or territories with 'membership exceeding tens of millions,' it is further asserted according to the website.
The community does not disclose its actual membership only providing estimates that have varied up and down drastically from one reporting to the next.
From nearly 200 million members reported in the late 1990s, the count has been quietly adjusted downward, now reportedly holding between 20 and 60 million members worldwide.
On its website, however, the community has settled for maintaining ambiguity and reporting its membership count simply as 'exceeding tens of millions'.
