AHMADIYYA College Basketball Team on Saturday emerged the overall winners of the maiden edition of one-week basketball championship, sponsored by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) technical director, Alhaji Mustapha Sulaiman Lawan held at the Kofar Nassarawa basketball court, Kano.
The final of the competition which attracted former prominent Kano Pillars basketball team players in the 80s, as well as the President of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Alhaji Tijjani Umar, saw Ahmadiyya College dominating the game with their good display and skills to successfully win the first quater with 13-7, second, third and fourth quater 25-21, 37-34 and 52-41.
Speaking with Daily Triumph Sports at the occasion, the competition’s sponsor, Alhaji Mustapha Sulaiman Lawan explained that he decided to sponsor the competition, as part of his little contribution not only to revive the game but also to encourage the teeming young basketballers toward developing their skills for future national and international engagements.
Alhaji Lawan who is an ex-player of Kano Pillars basketball team in the 80s, said that the competition is long overdue and reiterated his commitment to the complete development of the game from the grassroots in the zone.
Dignitaries who graced the occasion included the state Director of Sports, Alhaji Muhammad Nasiru Sulaiman, the NBBF president, Alhaji Tijjani Umar, the competition’s sponsor and NBBF technical director, Alhaji Mustapha Sulaiman Lawan, a former captain of Kano Pillars basketball team and now a director admin in the National Population Commission (NPC), Alhaji Datti Aminu Danbatta, Mr. Anthony E., the principal of Ahmadiyya College, among others.
Trophies and gifts were distributed to the participating teams.
