Four houses belonging to Ahmadiyah followers were attacked in a village in Bogor on Friday afternoon.

The attack on the houses in Ciaruteun, village, Cibulangbulang sub district, took place at 12.45 p.m after Friday prayer, said Ismail Hasani, a researcher from the Setara Institute for Peace and Democracy.

Ciaruteun is situated two kilometers from Cisalada, Ciampea, which is home to 600 Ahmadiyah followers and the place of attacks on Ahmadis last october.

“Back in 2008, an Ahmadiyah mosque in [Ciaruteun] village was also attacked by the local people,” said Firdaus, a spokesman for the Indonesia Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) told the Jakarta Globe.

Firdaus said police had arrived on the scene, but the angry mob was still there. It remained unclear if anyone had been injured in the attack.

He said Ahmadis had evacuated the village, but their community leader, Maman, stayed behind. The whereabouts of Maman remained unknown. He was believed to be hiding from the mob.

Meanwhile, Bogor Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Dadang Raharja has denied the attacks took place.

“There was no attack, it was only some villagers throwing stones at the houses of Ahmadiyah followers,” Dadang told the Globe on Friday, adding that the stones damaged the houses’s roofs and windows.

“No one was injured in the incident, and we are maintaining security in the area to prevent the villagers from being provoked by outsiders,” Dadang said.

There were 160 police officers deployed to the village.
