ISLAMABAD: A long time rights activist and a Member of National Assembly, Sherry Rehman has been appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, it was learned through media outlets.
The appointment comes after Husain Haqqani was ousted by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani at the insistence of Pakistan’s all powerful military establishment in the wake of the Memogate scandal.
Gilani has approved Ms. Rehman’s appointment, it was reported by Express 24/7.
“The prime minister is pleased to appoint Sherry Rehman as the new ambassador to the United States,” said the Prime Minister’s office, Express 24/7 reported.
Earlier it was suspected that Iffat Imran Gardezi, who serves as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, would be the Haqqani’s replacement on temporary basis.
In 2008 Rehman served as Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting and resigned from office in March of 2009.
Many beleive while the military will continue to influence Pakistan‘s US policy, Sherry Rehman, a sharp progressive democrat, is the right appointment to temper it.
