Police has registered a criminal complaint against unknown malefactors for mass graves desecrations in a small town, Dunyapur, in Lodhran district of Punjab, Pakistan, BBC earlier reported.

The crime took place in the dead of night late Saturday, said BBC Urdu News, and the crime scene was discovered early Sunday morning.

According to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan, 29 graves were violated and 7 gravestones were smashed and discarded in a desolate part of the town.

Lodhran District Police Officer (DPO), Agha Yousuf told BBC a few graves were damaged in the Ahmadiyya graveyard in the Dunyapur vicinity.

According to DPO Yousuf a case has been registered and a local Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) will lead an investigative team to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

Police has already started an investigation and some evidence has been collected from the graveyard, SHO Akram Chahttha from the local police station said.

According to the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, the Ahmadiyya graveyard in Dunyapur has existed since 1976 and has 29 Ahmadi graves.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community condemned the incident asserting that the defiling of any graves is an inhumane act and demanded serious consequences for the criminals.

According to the community the discriminatory Ahmadi-specific laws of 1984 have caused nearly 30 such incidents of grave destruction in different parts of the country.

As stated by Ibadul Haq in his report filed for BBC News, the National Assembly of Pakistan had amended the constitution in 1974 to declare Ahmadiyya Mulim sect in Islam as non-Muslims for the purposes of the law.

Later in 1984, during dictator General Ziaul Haque’s government anti-Ahmadiyya ordinance XX was passed criminalizing all acts of worship by Ahmadis, including saying Kalma (Muslim Creed), offering Muslim greetings of peace,  Assalam-o Alaykum; use of any Muslim terminology and, believe it or not,  “posing as a Muslim”.
