Pakistan: Lawyers need to show some maturity

The people responsible for tabling and passing such a resolution should understand that religion is a very personnel thing and it has nothing to do with our day-to-day dealings with each other.

LAWYERS have been a source of inspiration for people supporting democracy and rule of law in Pakistan. After the success of the movement for restoration of democracy, during the Musharraf era, this important segment of civil society has not shown the level of maturity expected of it.

Recently, some segments of lawyers’ fraternity have started displaying the sort of fundamentalist/radical ideals that were previously associated with militant outfits only.

Examples of such tendencies are showering rose petals on a murder accused (Mumtaz Qadri) or more recently the banning of the consumption of a soft drink brand in the Lahore Bar premises.

The reason given for this ban is that the brand is allegedly owned by people belonging to the Ahmedi community.

According to the Constitution of Pakistan, all citizens are equal in the eyes of the state and this fact was also reiterated by the Founder of Pakistan’s Aug 11 speech.

Since lawyers are supposed to interpret law and constitution, this ban coming from a lawyers’ body is extremely shocking.

The people responsible for tabling and passing such a resolution should understand that religion is a very personnel thing and it has nothing to do with our day-to-day dealings with each other.

Moreover, this resolution could also tarnish the image of the company owning this particular brand name since it has become a household name in the country.

Finally, the media should also show responsibility and not give coverage to such news stories as they provoke hatred and animosity towards a particular segment of society.
