The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association of Canada held their open house at the Vegreville Public Library on May 26. This event was available to promote religious harmony, dispel misconceptions about Islam and to inform people about the status that Islam gives to Mother Mary and women in general.
“We celebrate Canada Day because we’re proud to be Canadian. We stand up for Canada and if we had to defend this country, we would be the first ones to fight for it. As far as charity efforts, we participated in assisting after the fire in Slave Lake. We’re also over there to clean roads, parks, collect for the food bank and have blood drives,” Muhammad Dawood Khalid stated.
Mary – The Chosen One. Mary, the mother of Jesus (as) is the most prominent female figure in the Holy Qur’an and the only one identified by name, according to the posters presented during the open house.
Women have rights and are equal to men. They are given an independent position, which grants them propriety rights, making their responsibilities and rights as part of the divine law. The Holy Qur’an states “every human is free to believe in what he or she thinks is right” and no license is given to anyone to force ones beliefs on others.
“Mother Mary has a great role as the mother of the prophet – Jesus Christ. Women are supposed to be pure and follow her example,” Khalid said. Men are expected to be this way also because everything valuable in society is due to this teaching.”
“We believe that people should treat their husbands and wives with the upmost care, just like they are to their garments. Qur’an is the only book that talks about rights for women. Everyone has a role to play and each one has freedoms attached to it. If men or women want to work outside the home, they are allowed to,” Khalid commented.
Mobroor Roy was pleased to answer some questions also. “Women should cover their full body because this is a commandment of the Holy Qur’an. It saves them from corruption. There is freedom for women to follow or not. There is no compulsion in religion,” he answered.
Men help with the housework and child care. Khalid’s eyes were beaming while he spoke about his nine month old son. “I was up till 2 a.m. in the morning with my child. However, I managed to comfort him by driving around the city. It felt so good to take care of him.”
“A women has a right to choose her own life partner. Everyone should be with a man who is righteous. Islam will give her direction on how to select this person,” Khalid stressed.
“Finally, culture and religion usually get mixed together. The misconceptions are born and it is hard to tell whether the practice is from religion or tradition. Terrorism has nothing to do with religion. It is someone twisting around our faith for their own corrupt need. There is usually illiteracy at the route of it. You have to go deep and study religion and then decide. Everyone should read the Holy Books – the Bible and Holy Qur’an. There is light in the Bible and I am the person I am today because of this Holy Book,” Khalid said.
