A worshiper kneelt down in front of the excavator just before her church was demolished, in Setu Bekasi, on Thursday.

The Bekasi district administration issued an order to demolish the HKBP Taman Sari church on Wednesday, arguing that it was built in violation of a local bylaw requiring all houses of worship to secure a building permit before construction.

The church was destroyed as members of the congregation protested, cried and sang hymns.
