Western Europe’s largest Mosque and Silver Star promote health and wellbeing for local community
On Friday 19th April visitors at the Baitul Futuh mosque in Morden were offered free diabetes screening tests by Silver Star.
Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, founding patron of Silver Star, said he was "delighted that the mobile diabetes unit will be visiting the Baitul Futuh Mosque". He also asked people to "…visit the unit and take the test as it could save your life". His words were well received as more than 90 people attended the unit from 11.00 am till 3:30 pm. 17 patients were identified as high risk and were asked to contact their local GPs immediately.
Rafiq Hayat the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK said "promoting health and fitness is a key part of our faith and that is why we invited Silver Star to hold their screening session at our mosque. Silver Star plays a vital role in highlighting the potential challenge of diabetes at no cost to users. We sincerely appreciate their visit today and look forward to working with them in future."
An early diagnosis of diabetes makes it relatively easier to control and manage. As well as helping individuals, such screening programmes also help to ease some of the financial burden on the National Health Service. The NHS currently spends 10% of its annual budget on diabetes mostly due to the avoidable complications of the disease.
