The worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Guatemala lamented Thursday the strife that has erupted during the trip of President Otto Pérez to Israel, where the Palestinians protested because the President visited their territories without prior notice.
"This disagreement arising out of the complexity of the Israel-Palestine situation is unfortunate," said the Vice-President of the community in the United States, Naseem Mahdi, who said that the President should have been "advised that it is a delicate subject".
On Monday, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) protested the visit made by Perez on Sunday to a territory recognized as part of the State of Palestine without first coordinating it with the authorities in Ramallah.
The Chief negotiator for the PLO, Saeb Erekat, complained that Perez visited the old city of Jerusalem, occupied by Israel since 1967, without notifying the Palestinians, which the Government of Guatemala rejected.
Guatemala recognized the status accorded to Palestine as an observer State of the United Nations last April , after not having done so in November of 2012 in the General Assembly vote.
"Leaders must take into account the suffering of millions of people who live there," said Mahdi, who visits the country for the annual Convention of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
Insisting through a translator, in Mahdi's view, Pérez would have to have "shown greater sensitivity for the Palestinians living there.”
The small worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community will meet in 2014 for the 25th anniversary of its arrival in the country, where a mosque has provided humanitarian assistance in health and education to about 10,000 poor people in the past three years, according to its data.
