KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 2): Those spreading the Shia ideology in the country can be prosecuted under the Control and Restriction of the Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment and the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment on Contravening Fatwa.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said that under the Control and Restriction of the Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment, any individual propagating the Shia ideology could be prosecuted in the civil court.
"The country adopts the Ahli Sunnah Wal-Jamaah ideology and stern action will be taken against those propagating the Shia ideology," he told reporters at a Tabung Haji (TH) function, here yesterday.
Also present were TH chairman Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and TH group managing director and TH chief executive officer Datuk Ismee Ismail.
Jamil Khir said any individual contravening the fatwa of the Mufti could be charged under the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment on Contravening Fatwa.
He said the government was evaluating the existing laws from time to time to strengthen them to ensure that action could be taken to stop those propagating the shia ideology.
Meanwhile, Ismee said the decision on the number of Malaysian pilgrims going to Makkah for the haj this year would be made after Aidilfitri.
He said the first flight for the Malaysian haj pilgrims to the Holy Land was scheduled for Sept 7 while the date for the 'wukuf' was expected to be Oct 14.
Meanwhile in PUTRAJAYA, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) found that no complaint or report had been made on the propagation of the Shia ideology among its students.
Its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan said this was based on the monitoring of student activities in the campus, including students from Iran.
He said in a statement that the UPM Islamic Centre had also taken control measures such as not distributing any pamphlets or books on the Shia ideology in the campus.
