The Conference of World Religions my community organised at The Guildhall, in London – and a number of people from Leicester attended – brought home a much-needed message: the need for greater freedom of conscience.
About 500 delegates from 26 countries heard leaders from all faiths urging their communities to show support for greater understanding and harmony between faiths.
The conference was organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, as part of our centenary celebrations. The theme was God in the 21st Century.
Apart from the attendees, the conference also received many messages of support from key figures including the Queen, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Archbishop of York, the Archbishop of Wales, the Vatican and Prime Minister David Cameron.
Leicester East MP Keith Vaz sent a message of support stating: "Your values of tolerance, understanding and unity are integral to communities across the UK."
The worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (the Khalifa of Islam), delivered the keynote address.
The Khalifa highlighted that all the major world religions taught the worship of God and love and compassion for mankind in their original form.
He said that if these original teachings were upheld today it would lead to a harmonious society, free from conflict and war.
He also condemned governments across the world for prioritising defence and military spending above and beyond social welfare and humanitarian projects.
The Khalifa concluded by reiterating the fact that God is a "living God" who continues to listen to the prayers of mankind.
It was a pleasure for the delegates to be party to this. Archbishop Kevin McDonald, representing the Catholic Church, described the conference as "another moment of the coming together of the people of different religions in peace and justice".
