Al Shabab has publically executed a man for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad, the British broadcaster BBC reported Friday.

The Somali Islamist movement al-Shabab has for the first time publicly killed a man for “insulting prophet Muhammed”, a witnesses who spoke to the broadcaster confirmed.

The resident of Jamame in the lower Juba region were treated to the rare, albeit ugly, spectacle as the militant shot the victim by a firing squad.

“Al Shabab has in the past killed its dissents and people it accused of being spies, but has never killed people on the basis of blasphemy,” a BBC Somali reporter said.

The group controls large swathes of rural Somalia.

Witnesses say that the man was shot by firing squad after he pleaded guilty in a Sharia court trial.

Meanwhile, the group today kidnapped two teachers from Mandera. The teachers were reportedly not locals; they were not Somalis.
