Faith-based schools should teach all religions –Fashola
The Executive Director, Fadhl-i-Omar Ahmadiyya Muslim Education Organisation, Alhaji Mashud Fashola, has said there is nothing wrong in faith-based schools teaching all religions, provided they are still allowed to dictate their norms.
He also urged them to provide bursary and full scholarship to deserving pupils even as they offer affordable but quality education.
Fashola stated this on Tuesday at a briefing to mark the 21st anniversary of Mahmud Ahmadiyya College, Ijede, Lagos.
He said, “There is nothing wrong if you allow all faith-based schools to teach all religions. Only God is wise. I cannot say my own way is the best but we should deploy our faith to serve humanity. My conduct should be my faith but every school has the right to dictate its norms. Some schools are not affordable and so they exclude the poor. This is not right because our faith is meant to serve humanity.”
Fashola, a former lecturer at the Department of Economics, University of Lagos, also urged the government to address the gaps that leave out poor pupils from schooling.
He added, “Our public schools are a shambles morally, academically and spiritually. Policemen extort motorists and lecturers also extort students. Our educational system should teach us how to serve humanity so that we do not wake up one day and be like Syria where 30million children are not in school.”
The principal of the college, Alhaji Ibrahim Ogunmola, said the college had produced professionals in all human spheres.
He added that the college had managed to remain viable through the sacrifices and contributions of philanthropists and dedicated members of staff.
Acknowledging the contributions of the Parent-Teacher-Association, Ogunmola said the college was planning to establish a technical school as well as more branches in Osogbo and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The school, the educationist added, was committed to pupils how to serve humanity better.
