It has been a whirlwind week for American Muslims. They are trying to make sense of the dizzying rationales of politicians and media pundits as they struggle to determine the rightful status of Muslims in America.
When President Obama tweeted support for the 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed and invited him to the White House, it tipped off the conservatives. It clashed with their stance that paints the entire Muslim diaspora with a sweeping brush and puts them in the same league as the extremist fringe within the ranks of Islam.
This approach is anti-American and counterintuitive to the founding principles of this nation. Donald Trump (after the media backlash) has retracted his anti-Muslim sentiments. Sadly, Dr. Ben Carson is unwilling to change his hard-line and erroneous stance that a Muslim cannot be the president of the United States. This is not only a bigotry-laced statement, but rather an outright rejection of the Constitution that doesn't mandate a religious test for the post of the President.
This incident is telling. Some conservatives are willing to go far to appeal to their right-wing base.
However, as a Muslim, I am not fretting. In the past, America has rejected similar misjudgments about Catholics and Jews. Carson is headed to become a footnote in history.
