Suwanee resident Saima Ahmad joined about 60 other delegates of Ahmadiyya Muslim Women Association in Washington D.C. on Sept. 11 to raise awareness of the organization’s efforts.

“One of the important things was to make a statement about the image of Muslim women – (we hear) they’re not educated, they’re oppressed, they can’t talk,” Ahmad said. “Having about 60 Muslim women on Capitol Hill at the same time was a powerful message that we are aware of what’s going on, and we are against the extremist activities ISIS is doing in the name of Islam.”

AMWA’s primary focus is to prevent youth radicalization and provide a healthy environment for young Muslims to grow up in. The organization has more than 5,000 members in the U.S. and over 100 members in the Georgia/South Carolina chapter.

AMWA exists as an auxiliary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, established in 207 countries around the globe. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community exists as a Khalifat under its Khalifa, Mirza Masroor Ahmad. Ahmad denounces terrorism and promotes “jihad of the pen” and self-reformation instead of bloodshed and disorder.

“I think that what people need to know is that there is a community that represents true Islam. We are focusing our energies on training our youngsters, creating positive role models, getting them engaged in the community and getting them in programs on the right track,” Saima Ahmad said. “The true message of Islam is peace.”

The Georgia/South Carolina chapter of AMWA does community service throughout the metro-Atlanta area and works with other religious organizations to help those in need. Next week they will be collaborating with Latter-Day Saints Church in Suwanee, and they have worked with American Red Cross, Joseph’s Network, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Madina Food Pantry and Family Promise of Cobb County in the past.

AMWA’s visit to Congress focused on spreading a message of peace and freedom from religious persecution.

“The objective of this caucus is to educate Congress and the public of religious prosecution, any minorities wherever they are. Any minority being persecuted because of their faith,” Ahmad said. “What we wanted was their support for all of the campaigns that go on. Right now we’re having a blood drive because Islam is pro-life. We support the sanctity of life. We would like to give life.”
