Leading Muslim figures have called for solidarity in the wake of the Paris terror attacks as thousands of people are expected to attend a vigil tonight in Trafalgar Square in honour of those killed or wounded.

Speaking to London Live on behalf of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Farooq Aftab said it was important for communities to remain together after he condemned the atrocities.

He said: "We offer our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the nation of France, its people and its Government after this heinous terrorist attack

"Any form of extremism or terrorism is against the teachings of Islam.

"As the Prime Minister mentioned today this is exactly What these extremists want. They want to divide communities, what we have to do is show solidarity and that we are together."

On Saturday, two vigils were scheduled to take place in Trafalgar Square.

The first event was at 2pm, whilst a larger gathering is expected at 9pm with hundreds of people expected to attend, many of them French people living in Britain.

Tonight's vigil has been organised by two London-based Frenchmen, who said police had agreed to cover the event.

London also fell silent this morning, when the Lord Mayor of London led a two-minute silence from the balcony at The Mansion House at 11am, ahead of the annual Lord Mayor's show.
