“And whoso gave life to one, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind” says in the Quran, the Islamic holy book. Even though as a Muslim, these words carry a lot of weight but unfortunately, I cannot say that I have ever saved a life.

Human Blood is a precious lifesaving force and has been defined as a “national resource”. One out of every seven people entering a hospital needs blood and as a commodity with little shelf life, it is essential to keep replenishing it’s stock. With less than five percent of the eligible population donating blood in the U.S. each year, it is challenging for the Blood centers across the U.S. to maintain an adequate supply.

People who have leukemia, neurological disorders, kidney diseases and organ transplants all rely on blood centers for their needs.

Having born with the Thalassemia trait like many other south East Asians and also as one of many females who are iron deficient, I have never been able to donate blood. Thankfully there are other ways to save lives besides making a donation and organizing blood drives is one of them. This is why I proposed the idea to the leadership of Ahmadiyya Muslim Women Association (AMWA) GA chapter (which I am a member of) to hold a blood drive. AMWA GA chapter president Farhat Pall hopes to bring the “community together for the advancement of mankind and eventually give rise to a peaceful, loving and cohesive society”.

The blood drive held on October 31st was in partnership with Café Raik (Duluth) and LifeSouth.

When the organizers at Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) U.S.A were thinking of ways to give back to community at the tenth anniversary of 9/11, they came up with “Muslims for Life”. This nationwide blood drive campaign targeted to collect 10,000 pints of blood in an effort to save ten times the number of lives lost on September 11, 2001 in one month to promote that Islam refutes terrorism and is pro-life.

What better way to give the message of peace by shedding blood to save lives instead of shedding blood to create disorder and chaos?

The response was tremendous and the campaign surpassed its goal and collected more than eleven thousand pints of blood across the nation. I was especially delighted by the effort since AMC-GA chapter took the lead among the 72 Ahmadiyya chapters and helped collect more than seven hundred pints of blood in just one month.

Since then 1074 blood drives were organized and 39,477 pints collected potentially helping to save more than 118,000 lives.

This year AMC-GA chapter once again organized and supported multiple blood drives including those at its mosque Baitul Ata (Norcross), Georgia State University and Georgia Tech.

“Cafe Raik is honored to sponsor the "Muslims for Life" blood drive. It is our goal and hope that by sponsoring this event we contribute to saving more lives”, says Ronnie Baroud on behalf of the popular local Mediterranean restaurant.

The blood drive was a success. The hope is that our small effort to help LifeSouth with their minimum daily need of blood supply will in turn support all those local hospitals that rely on LifeSouth for their constant need.
