Syracuse, N.Y. -- When Dr. Muhammad Iqbal heard about the mass shootings in California earlier this week, he was shocked and saddened.

And he knew it was time, again, to speak up. Whenever there is a shooting that appears to be linked to the Islamic community, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community reaches out from across the nation to condemn it, and remind people that theirs is a peaceful religion.

The group is a relatively small sect of Islam in Syracuse, with a congregation of roughly 50 people attending the East Syracuse mosque.

"Human life is very sacred," said Iqbal, a radiation oncologist."We believe the real teaching of Islam is only peace and the sanctity of life. Under no circumstances is violence permitted."

After the 9/11 attacks, the Islamic group started an ongoing blood drive effort,Muslims for Life, which has collected thousands of pints of blood in honor of 9/11 victims.

Iqbal said his mosque has not received any threats or negative attention as a result of the California attacks.

"I was extremely saddened over this senseless violence. Which has nothing to do with true teachings of faith. Koranic teaching is one innocent life taken is equivalent to the killing of (all of) humanity."
