On Saturday, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at (AMJ) of Belize held its second Annual National Convention, which touched points on conventional issues and planned programs.

Safwan Choudhry, spokesperson of JMA, stated that the significance of holding the Convention was to bring together all the Muslims of Belize who hail from all surrounding areas of the Belize District. It was one of largest events for the community in Belize, Choudhry said.

The total attendance ranged from 100 to 115 people, both Muslims and non Muslims. Two politicians, Minister Patrick Faber and Mayor Darrel Bradley were among the invitees.

In his address, Faber emphasized on the contribution that the AMJ is making to Belize. Faber also pledged his support to the Muslim Community, on behalf of the Prime Minister.

Faber pledged to support different initiatives that the AMJ has contributed to Belize, such as charity contributions to schools,

“One of the things that he really appreciated, was the message of the AMJ, which is the peaceful message of true Islam. He said that the this community represents true Islam,” Choudhry told the Reporter.

In his speech, Bradley focused more on his relationship with the AMJ. He mentioned his visit to the International Headquarters of the AMJ in London, two years ago and his meeting with the Kalifa of the international community, Mirza Masroor Ahmed.

Bradley spoke of the diversity of religions in Belize – people of all different religions who strive to work together to promote peace. The Mayor also recognized that the AMJ is peacefully representing Islam in Belize.

Choudhry stated that one of the most significant achievements of the Convention is to tackle the negative image that Muslims have in the international community where they are perceived as threats and danger.

The general audience present was able to hold a question and answer session, where the audience showed its enthusiasm to learn about Islam.

Choudhry stated that if anyone has any questions, concerns or queries, they may be directed to Imam Naveed Mangla at 6152651.
