UK: Dundee Ahmadiyya Muslims react to councillor’s Islamophobic text messages

A DUNDEE city councillor’s position will be “untenable” if allegations he sent hateful messages to a Muslim colleague are found to be true, it has been claimed.

Craig Melville has been suspended from his role as an aide to SNP deputy leader Stewart Hosie.

According to reports, Mr Melville is alleged to have sent a number of texts to an unnamed woman within the party, a day after the Paris terror attacks.

[M]ore than 120 people have backed an online petition calling for Mr Melville to resign following the allegations.

Shoaib Khan, spokesman for Ahmadi Muslim Youth volunteers in Dundee, said: “I would not expect this kind of thing from anyone. It is something I am hoping isn’t true, to be honest.”

Muhammad Ahsan Ahmad, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Dundee, said the organisation “condemned all instances of Islamaphobia”.

The Tele was unable to reach Mr Melville for comment today and the recipient of the alleged texts declined to comment. An SNP spokeswoman said: “The SNP condemns Islamophobia in the strongest possible terms and we will not tolerate it in our party.

“Craig Melville has been immediately suspended from the SNP and from his employment.”
