Ahmadi Muslims across the UK offered their heartfelt condolences to the family of LibDem peer, Lord Avebury who passed away aged 87. Lord Avebury was a distinguished Parliamentarian who championed human rights for all and was a close friend of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for over 30 years. Lord Avebury was also a founding member of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Lord Avebury, who was the longest serving Lib Dem peer, was a fearless and articulate campaigner who called for the establishment of rights for all. With a political career that spanned more than 50 years, Lord Avebury won the respect of colleagues and communities everywhere through his determination for justice and equality. It was this passion for peace that saw him become the recipient of the inaugural Ahmadiyya Muslim Prize for the Advancement of Peace in 2010 in recognition of his lifetime’s contribution to the cause of human rights.

The World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Khalifa (Caliph), His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“Lord Avebury was a tireless campaigner for human rights and spent his life working towards establishing peace in the world. Indeed, it was his exemplary work in this field that led him to being the very first recipient of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Prize for the Advancement of Peace. Most certainly, Ahmadi Muslims across the world will miss Lord Avebury and will forever hold sentiments of deep respect for him.”

Lord Avebury was a regular speaker at the community’s key events and was admired for his sharp insight and care that he brought to focus on every issue.

Rafiq Hayat, National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK said:

“Lord Avebury was a champion for the oppressed- an internationalist who shone the light on persecution across the world. We have lost a great humanitarian who brought compassion and caring to the political stage. May God grant Lord Avebury peace and comfort his family during this difficult time. Ameen.”
