SYDNEY — Mosques are symbol and a beacon of peace is the message Umran Bhatti, imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community for the Atlantic region, tries to share everyday.

Umran Bhatti, imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community for the Atlantic region, stands outside the mosque on Grand Lake Road. The mosque hosted an open house on Sunday as part of national 'visit a mosque week.'

That was especially the case on Sunday as a nationwide 'visit a mosque' campaign was launched that opened the doors to the Grand Lake Road place of worship for all to enter.

"What I notice there is still much fear within the Cape Breton community about what Islam is," Bhatti said, prior to Sunday's open house from 6-8 p.m.

"We are inviting our local members, our local friends, media and others to come and see the mosque and what it is and how people worship. There is nothing to fear, as Muslims are taught to be peaceful within themselves and with the surroundings."

Previously, Bhatti has held open houses around Cape Breton, including ongoing visits to local libraries.

More to come.
