Canadian Muslims on Sunday launched the national "Visit a Mosque'' campaign, including in Cornwall, at Baitun Nasir Mosque on Balmoral Avenue.
And Jeannine and Hans Wielinga took advantage of the welcome sign.
"We find it very interesting,'' said Jeannine during a tour of the mosque in Cornwall's north-central end, not far from the train station. "We had a nice young man who showed us around, and we're quite impressed with all of the facilities.''
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada -- whose slogan is Muslims who believe in the Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and promote ''Love for all, Hatred for none'' -- in a press release late last week announcing the campaign said misconceptions regarding Islam have become prevalent, and the invitation to Canadians to visit its mosques and gatherings would be an opportunity to experience first hand the true and peaceful teachings of Islam.
The event included opportunities across the country to speak to Canadians visiting mosques, Imams, and Muslim youth.
Local chapters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada will be providing information and visual exhibitions regarding Islam, as well as "meet and greets'' with community leaders and members.
At the open house at Baitun Nasir Mosque (Cornwall Mosque) on Sunday afternoon, mosque president Tahir Khalid said the campaign is ongoing, not just this week.
"We have events like this throughout the year,'' Khalid said. "The focus is on educating our families and (guests) about the beautiful teaching of Islam and Ahmadiyya.
"We want to interact with our Canadian brothers and sisters and give them a message of peace and love.''
Khalid and volunteers provided a quote from the Holy Prophet Muhammad, that loyalty to country is part of faith.
Lal Khan Malik, the national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at Canada, thinks the campaign will be an excellent opportunity for Canadians to meet their Muslim neighbours, friends and fellow citizens.
"(People will) learn how Muslims truly live and practice their religion.'' he said. "Many misconceptions have crept into the minds of people due to the unfortunate behaviour of a fringe minority . . . this initiative allows Canadians to meet and interact with Muslims on a personal level and truly understand our beliefs.''
Many mosques from coast-to-coast participated, including Baitun Nur Mosque in Calgary, Al-Nusrat in Montreal, Darur Rehmat in Saskatoon, Baitul Hafeez in Sydney and Baitur Rahman in Vancouver.
