My grandmother, a middle school graduate, was married in her teens. Though physically young at the time of her marriage she was ready to take the responsibility of her new household. Ignoring her young age she as a mother marvelously bore all the pain in raising her children. That teenager turned her house into a living example of heaven! Her love was strong enough to transform ordinary human beings into stars. Lecturer, Gold Medalist, vice president of a bank, physician (Director of ICU), engineer (Regional Director of a multinational company), these are not just titles but designations of those children who belong to that teenager who wonderfully groomed their future in exchange for nothing! Her role in the upbringing of her children made me believe that mothers can do wonders and build the world of tomorrow. On this occasion when we are celebrating Women History Month I want to shed some light on the role of mothers.
In this modern time when everything is possible with the help of technology, we find restlessness at its peak. The world is in desperate need for a solution. A solution that can bring back peace and contentment to the earth. Despite of all efforts by those in authority, the world is still continuing to move towards destruction. So in order to find a cure we need to start investigating the cause at the micro level. To begin with, we know that today's homes are devoid of peace, love and harmony. Selfishness and individualism have taken its place. Greed and fondness for pleasure have made people crazy. They give preference to their desires ignoring the consequences. And the greatest consequence which we are facing is the destruction of homes or family system. Even mothers have forgotten their role and are carried away with the trends of the society. It is the need of time that we reiterate this concept and bring awareness to the people that real paradise lies in building homes. It lies in strengthening ties of kinship. When we have peaceful units in the form of homes, we will surely have a peaceful community which will culminate in a peaceful nation. And all this cannot be achieved without mothers who are the key players in this scenario. Islam has placed this responsibility on the shoulders of mothers 1500 years ago. At that time Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Heaven lies under the feet of mothers." Therefore, I want to shed some light on the role of all mothers irrespective of race and religion in building the home and turning them into heavens according to the teachings of Islam.
Further elaborating this concept Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the Fourth khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community said, "When it is said that heaven is under the feet of mothers it does not mean that there is heaven under every mother's feet. It means that if heaven can be attained by subsequent generations, it can only be attained through mothers who themselves have become a heavenly sign and heaven has become manifest in their appearance. The progeny of such mothers is bound to belong to Paradise. The decision making for the future of subsequent generations is a task for women. And they have to make this decision today otherwise the future will indeed remain dark." Seeing motherhood through the concept laid down by the Fourth khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a mother bears all pain in carrying her child and afterwards sacrifices her comfort and desires for her child. As she ages passing from young to middle age, she watches her child growing and swiftly embracing success and piety which would have never been possible without her selfless devotion and love. Such a home becomes a symbol of heaven! On the contrary, if this role is not properly played then these units turn to hell and the children of such homes may not give a promising future. Doubtlessly mothers have a unique role marked by challenges yet only mothers can build good nations. By the Grace of God Almighty I, mother of four strive every day to transform my home into heaven through love, patience and selflessness. My journey of motherhood has a goal to turn my children into shining stars of tomorrow. We mothers need to realize that peaceful homes are the need of the time and mothers are the sole players that can bring peace back on earth. This is what Islam teaches us and this is what real Islam is.
