NEW ORLEANS - Area Muslims say their hearts and prayers go out to the victims of the deadly bombings in Belgium and other terrorists acts across the world.
They also condemn those who commit mass murder in the name of Islam.
"Our hearts feel the pain of the people and our thoughts go, not again, not in my name again," Tahir Cheema said.
"My sympathy goes to those people who lost their loved ones, you know," Sheikh Tahir Ahmend said . "Those people are not Muslims. They are terrorists. They're killers."
Ahmed and Cheema are members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center in Kenner.
They say less than one percent of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims are radicalized.
Local Muslims want people to know that they believe what their motto states, "Love for all, hatred for none."
"Islam means peace," Ahmed said. "Our religion says if you kill one person, you kill the whole humanity."
"We think about the teachings of the Holy Quran and our holy prophet, peace be upon him, that how come these people can go so wrong," Cheema said.
The Muslims say all followers of Islam get blamed for the acts of a few.
"Whenever these incidents happen, there is a perception that all the Muslims are like this and we feel that fear," Cheema said.
"These people, they hijack our religion," Ahmed said. "They are trying to create chaos, you know."
The Muslim Community Center is sponsoring a conference in New Orleans to help dispel misconceptions about the religion.
The "True Islam and the Extremists" event will be held at Loyola University on April 12 from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Organizers hope the event will help build bridges of understanding among people of all faiths.
